My Big Book of Catholic Bible Stories by Heidi Hess Saxton

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a copy of Heidi Hess Saxton's new book My Big Book of Catholic Bible Stories in the mail. I was even more excited when I took a peek inside. I have never seen a children's Bible book like this before --  well-known author Heidi Hess Saxton has done an amazing job of compiling and organizing these valuable resources to make this a uniquely Catholic Bible story book for children.

An ideal faith formation tool for both parents and children, this book contains: more than 175 Bible stories (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition) from the deuterocanonical books as well as the Old and New Testaments, beautiful, classical illustrations by Natalie Carabetta, cross references to liturgical reading and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, an introduction, Catholic prayers, and quotes from the saints. It has a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur (the Bishop of the Diocese of Nashville, the Most Reverend David R. Choby, STB, JCL), which is a mark of a solid Catholic book.

It also contains the following supplemental sections:

Going Deeper, related readings with fun and educational activities for the whole family
Did You Know? fun facts
Special Words:  teach the meaning of unusual and unfamiliar biblical terms

While it is primarily geared toward children in the 7 - 12 age bracket, this attractively designed, child-friendly (with color-coded sections) Catholic Bible would be appreciated and enjoyed by both younger and older children. I highly recommend My Big Book of Catholic Bible Stories for all Catholic families who are searching for a Bible for their children that will readily motivate them to learn and to grow in their faith. It is also a welcome addition to school and church libraries and would be useful in teaching CCD classes. I'm planning on giving this beautiful book to my niece's son, who will be turning seven this year -- it is truly a treasure that I want to keep in our family for years to come.
