THE Christian songs continue to flow from Tuatapere writing partners Sue Hogbin and Jo Cleeton.

The pair have released a double album, Let Your Saints Shout For Joy, recorded at Invercargill's increasingly productive Riverland Studio.

The worship songs on the first disc tend towards faster tempo, open expressions of praise, whereas the second disc, of communion songs, though lively in places, tends more towards intimate and reflective themes.

As with earlier releases, such as a Christmas collection and their debut A Heart On Fire, the new collection is less a showcase of their own performance talents than a way to get the songs out into the community.

Nothing pleases the two writers more than hearing other voices embrace their songs. Says Hogbin: "We really want these songs to be sung and enjoyed." Cleeton agrees.

"When I hear other people playing or singing our songs, it's really an awesome experience." A British immigrant, she was back in her homeland in June, where the congregation at the chapel she used to attend surprised her with one of her own pieces.

"It was lovely to hear a song that they'd brought to life in their own way." Cleeton laughs when reminded of an acknowledgment in the album credits to music teacher Colin Hendry for helping her overcome her own reticence as a singer: "I took a great deal of convincing I could sing." The album also includes young voices -- Jasmine Bragg, Grace and Madeline Jones. Hogbin and Cleeton find the younger voices evocative in their own right, and also hope they will be enjoyed as an encouraging reminder that young people can also sing Christian songs with honesty and understanding.

The idea of a double album seemed natural, given that Cleeton and Hogbin continue to find the music flows through them.

When A Heart On Fire was released in 2005 they reckoned they had come up with about 300 songs in the previous two years, though more from inspiration than perspiration. Since then, it has all continued to come naturally.
